In the 70’s also America’s “bikecology”  movement sees the human-propelled two-wheeler as a solution to traffic, conservation and environmental problems.  Mayor John B. Lindsay was an enthusiastic bicycle rider who established the cyclist’s role in the city of New York. He was in favor of urban bicycling and added the first bike lanes. Back in the 70s, Lindsay closed Fifth Avenue to traffic on Sunday, just for cyclists to enjoy.  Nice Mayor!
